Needle Phobia Definition
Trypanophobia is an extreme fear of medical procedures involving injections or hypodermic needles, or Aichmophobia. Fear of sharply pointed objects. However, no matter what the name, someone suffering from a Needle phobia can quite literally put them in a life or death situation.
In today’s current COVID-19 pandemic, the vaccine is currently our only know way to protect ourselves and others. Someone who has a needle phobia will face a terrible inner battle in the mind, and then the body. “Do I put myself into an awful anxious place and have my vaccine”, or do I put myself and those I love in danger of contracting covid. Even if someone manages to fight it off they do risk (for me this is the worse part) Long Covid.
Our Ancestors
In the days of our ancestors, to be pierced, by wound , plant or wood, would more than likely end in death. So our hippocampus, part of our primitive brains, stored that sharp items that can pierce the skin, you need to flee from. This is how your phobia is created. Therefore your phobia is either a vasovagal or hyperalgesia response. But, which ever it is you suffer from a real and stressful physiological effect takes place in your body. No matter how much someone tells you, “it’s ridiculous”, “pull yourself together”, you still cannot control that extreme fear.

What does having a Needle Phobia actually mean?
If a needle causes you such extreme emotions and physical symptoms, it becomes a questionable internal battle to get life-saving vaccines. This is also true of blood tests and even medical necessary operations.
Do you know the source of your Needle Phobia?
Are you a fainter? Is that the cause or a symptom? In the past, is that what happened when you had an injection, your blood pressure dropped causing you to faint and did that prevent the injection from taking place? Yes = Cause = Vasovagal response
Do you find having an injection etc., extremely painful? Yes = Hyperalgesia response
Is it a prior event that has caused your needle phobia? This is where mine stemmed from. As I was born abroad when we came back to the UK every year we had to have vaccinations and even sometime going back again. I was always the 1st in the queue, asking to be 1st and I would happily watch the needle go in. At the age of 5/6 it was the first injection at school.
I had no idea why everyone was so scared. So volunteered to go last as everyone was so scared. I can still see myself sat at the back of the room very clearly. The nurse was feed up, tired and grumpy by the time I go to her, she was rough, and I heard the skin rip. First time I had really experienced pain with it, but it was walking back across the playground back to my class, on my pristine white shirt there was a small circle of bright red blood!! I never had blood on clothing before – that was my phobia set in – My amygdala and hippocampus, from that day on, associated anything to do with a needle as a threat to my life. This is classed as an Associative Needle Phobia
Were you physically or emotionally restrained to have a needle procedure? This is classed as an Associative Needle Phobia

My Story Cont...
My phobia went on to cause me serious problems, as I am one of those complex human beings that need a lot of medical procedures and blood tests. So I would always need to have someone with me. I would always attempt to make an appointment first thing so I was the first to been seen. My father was very sympathetic with me and would try to get me some Valium to have prior to me going. Especially if it was a blood clinic job where sitting and waiting would get me so upset and distraught. I had the added issue of hidden veins and they would collapse the more worked up I got (part of the flight response from the amygdala).
Even seeing needles on TV would make me nauseas, people talking about it, or showing the inside of the elbow, even taking someone’s plaster off who had a blood test, I broken down and was hysterical to the point of vomiting. I had a sprinter in my foot once when I worked at a nursing home. The Matron, who I trusted and respected a great deal, tried to get it out for me. She got a hypodermic needle, I was ok, no anxiety nothing, took my shoe and sock off, put my foot on her knee. She looked at it, picked up the needle and I instantly threw up. I had no prior notification that my phobia was going to kick in. So you can see my phobia, was serve, not logically and unpredictable.
My Own Hypnotherapy for Needle Phobia
Fast forward to training to be a hypnotherapist. Our phobia training month, one of my fellow students worked on me, all the time I was fully aware of what was happening and didn’t feel I was in trance, and was not at all convinced that this had done anything for me. Hands Up, I thought it was stupid, cynical was definitely how I felt. Fast forward two weeks and as I said before I am one of those humans that is complex, I had to go to A&E with a suspected heart attack, under COVID conditions. NO chaperone, no prior knowledge of person administering the blood test that I knew I had to have, having to sit and wait in a very busy A&E.
I’ll be honest, in the past I would have been hysterical, vomiting and no hope of getting the blood without me passing out and a doctor getting it from the groin (yes this has happened on several occasions, with maybe even some expletives at the doctor or nurse, refusal to let someone try again). Sure enough I was seen pretty quick. The nurse called my name, she reminded me instantly of that nurse when I was 5/6, tired, grumpy. I tried to brighten the mood by saying “I have a needle phobia”. The death stare, shot a bolt of fear into me. “Do you have bad veins, or do they collapse? Are you a fainter”, “a little of all I said”. “GREAT” was her response, her bed side manner needed some work.
Where Hypnotherapy for Needle Phobia Kicked In…
Anyway, sat down, and noticed that I didn’t have that risking fear in my stomach and I felt rational and calm. I was a little perplexed. Sure enough my veins were hidden as normal so it took a while of her searching, inner elbows, hands, even the blood gas point was examined. Finally, “I think I have one”, normally this would have got me refusing her to continue, but I said nothing. I concentrated on my breathing and the voice of my fellow student telling me that I was safe and secure. Well she got it first time. I couldn’t believe it. I was so happy, no tears, no fainting or vomiting and I didn’t feel exhausted. Since then I have had both COVID vaccines, flu jab, blood tests and even had an operation. I can say that it is amazing feeling not to be so anxious and wind up.
The moral of the story, Hypnotherapy for Needle Phobia issues really does work! Fact!!!
