Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or CBT is a form of talking therapy or counselling; endorsed by NICE and the NHS as the preferred treatment for many mental health issues. Using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) I work with clients to overcome and manage a variety of mental health issues.
In mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, substance use, phobias, and many others, negative thinking takes many forms. For example:
Thinking in black and white
Overgeneralising
Ignoring the positive
Focusing on the negative
Catastrophising.
CBT works by identifying, tackling, and changing unhelpful thinking so that your mindset, behaviours, and overall well-being improve with practice. When you change the way you feel about specific situations, for example, it will likely be easier to adapt your behaviours in the future.
You’ll work with me to identify the thinking patterns that cause your distress. This is an important step in managing overwhelming emotions and unhelpful behaviours.
How are the sessions structured?
CBT is a time-limited therapy designed to generate significant results within 6 to 8 sessions of 50 minutes each. When both the problems and goals have been clarified, we will start planning the content of sessions and explore how to deal with the problems. These discussions take place throughout the process.
